Today, October 2nd, 2019 the Bulgarian Government has approved a Bill for amendment of the Law on Bulgarian Citizenship (“the Bill”) and proposed it for adoption by the Bulgarian Parliament. The Bill contains an explicit provision repealing the investment options for acquiring Bulgarian citizenship, including the one through the acquisition of government bonds.
The Bill is indeed just a legislative proposition and may or may not pass. However, this act of the Bulgarian Government is an indication about the Bulgarian citizenship policy going forward. Thus, any steps in this regard must be taken keeping in mind that – by the time the applicant is eligible to apply for Bulgarian citizenship – there is a risk that the citizenship-by-investment program might be closed and the ultimate goal might not be achieved.
