The US-based consultancy firm WorleyParsons is to consult the construction of a 880MW generator at the coal-fired power plant in the country’s third largest city of Varna . WorleyParsons will have to deal with the design, procurement, construction management, start-up, and warrantee management of the project. The unit will be built under the combined cycle gas turbine technology and will comprise two gas turbines and one steam turbine. It will be the first of that kind in the country. The investment is estimated at EUR 800mn. The unit, which will replace three of the plant's coal-fired generation units with total capacity of 620 MW, should become operational in 2013 and will generate electricity in the next 30 years. The Czech electricity company CEZ is the full owner of the plant which is the second largest coal-fired power plant on the Balkans. The power producer has six generators with total production capacity of 1,260MW. Three of the units are held as “cold reserve”. The power plant produced 3.7TWh of electricity in 2007 which is estimated at about 10% of the country’s power consumption.
