Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ)

Two bills offering different options for taking the state railway carrier BDZ out of financial collapse were to be discussed at the parliamentary transport committee August 3. The bills were submitted by the government and by Yordan Mirchev, chairman of the committee. The two bills will most likely be combined and put to vote at the plenary hall as one. Mirchev initiated a month ago a discussion on the measures that should be taken for the rehabilitation of BDZ and the railway infrastructure.

The Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) will hire a financial consultant to draft a rehabilitation programme for the company. The structural reform in BDZ has been unsuccessful, which is not attributable to the fact that it was divided into two companies (one operating the trains and another handling the railway infrastructure) but to the applied principle of separation, transfer of commitments, obligations and many other factors. The consultant should be selected pursuant to the Public Procurement Act.

The European Union will provide 800 million euro for Bulgaria's rail transport renovation. More than 60 railway stations will be repaired and renovated in Bulgaria.
