The cabinet has agreed at its meeting yesterday (April 6, 2011) to launch concession procedure for the country’s largest airport in the capital city of Sofia, Dnevnik Daily reported. The procedure may start after three-four months at the earliest. The concession is based on the necessity to modernise the facility. It will comprise the construction of a new cargo terminal, new general aviation terminal, new VIP terminal, new fuel storehouses and improvement of the overall infrastructure of the airport. At the same time, Sofia Airport is repaying a loan for the construction of Terminal 2, which amounted to BGN 85mn (EUR 43.5mn) at the end of last year. The airport handled a record high of 3.297mn passengers in 2010, up by 5.2% in a year. Sofia Airport has two terminals - the smaller Terminal 1 hosts low-cost airlines and charter flights while Terminal 2 is used by traditional airlines. The airport posted BGN 14mn profit last year.
