The state telecom regulator decided to grant point-to-multi-point licences to five local firms – BTC (the country’s main landline operator), Cosmo Bulgaria Mobile (operating the second largest wireless grid GloBul), Trans Telecom, Nexcom, and Maxcom. The last two have already received point-to-multi-point licences at other frequencies auctioned in 2005. The new frequencies are awarded without a tender as the number of candidates is smaller than the number of licences offered. The point-to-multi-point technology allows telecom operators to integrate wireless and landline grids offering internet, voice, and video transferred based on WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) or other standards.
