The European Commission (EC) approved four financial memoranda under ISPA programme for a total 29.7 mln euro ($37.5 mln), the Bulgarian Ministry of Finance announced on May 1, 2006. The money will be used to implement projects in the railway and road infrastructure, and waters and waste sectors. The money will finance the reconstruction of the railways Sofia – Plovdiv, Sofia – Dragoman, Sofia – Pernik – Radomir, Veliko Turnovo – Dryanovo, Gabrovo – Kazanluk, Stara Zagora – Dimitrovgard – Haskovo, Filevo – Haskovo – Harmanli, Montana – Vratsa – Mezdra – Botevgrad and ring roads in Montana, Vratsa and Gabrovo. Projects on hard waste management will be financed in seven regions of the country. These include Levski, Borovo, Veliko Turnovo, Varna, Stara Zagora, Lukovit and Kostenets. Dobrich, Kardzhali, Pernik, Plovdiv, Veliko Turnovo, Vidin and Yambol will improve their water-supply and drainage infrastructure. The implemented investment projects will be the first by which Bulgaria will apply for finance under the structural and the Cohesion funds of the European Union, after the state's admission.
