More than 717 km of motorways will be built by 2015 according to a draft National Strategy for Integrated Development of Infrastructure in Bulgaria in 2006-2015 discussed by the Council for Coordination and Control and Implementation of Infrastructure Projects of National Significance.
The Programme provides for the completion of the Trakia, Lyulin, Maritsa, Strouma and Cherno More motorways. The total indicative value of the projects is slightly over 3,000 million euros. The funds will be provided from the EU Cohesion Fund, from the national budget and through public-private partnerships.
The Maritsa motorway (114 km) is expected to be completed by 2009 and its construction will cost some 360 million euros. The construction of the Strouma motorway will cost almost 600 million euros and it is expected to be completed by 2012. The Cherno More motorway is expected to be completed by 2017.
Another priority under the Programme is the reconstruction and rehabilitation of sections of the European transport corridors. A total of 175 km of new roads will be built and old roads rehabilitated and upgraded. The project is worth 395.5 million euros.
By the end of its term the Government is planning to upgrade 913 km of road infrastructure, including part of the Trakia motorway and 245 km under the Transit Roads 3 Programme and 352 km under the Bulgaria Transit Roads 4 Project.
The reconstruction and the extension of Sofia Airport is expected to be completed by the end of the year and two extensions of the Sofia underground - from Mladost 1 to Mladost 4 and from Mladost 1 to Drouzhba, are expected to be completed by 2012.
The Programme of the Ministry of Transport provides for awarding concessions for 29 ports.
The National Strategy for Integrated Development of Infrastructure in 2006-2015 is presented to representatives of the business circles, the local authorities and the international financial institutions, and is currently undergoing extensive public discussion.
