The board of directors of the National Electricity Company (NEC) has approved a plan for restructuring of the state-owned utility through setting up a fully-owned subsidiary specialised in operating the national power transmission grid. The company restructuring plan will be sent for approval by the ministry of economy. The set-up of the new entity follows the guidelines of the EU directive for separating trade and power generation facilities from transmission activities. The new structure of NEC will include two separate subsidiaries handling public supplies and transmission. The entity defined as public supplier will formally succeed the current juridical registration of NEC and will manage own hydropower generation facilities as well as trade operations while the newly founded unit will operate the high-pressure transmission grid and related activities for the normal functioning of the national power system. Depending on the forthcoming government decisions, NEC is expected to become a main stakeholder in the projected nuclear plant in Belene. As recalled, NEC is currently running a tender for selecting a main constructor of the plant, which is projected to have two nuclear generators with a power capacity of MW 1,000 each.
