Nexcom to invest EUR 20mn in WiMax network by 2009

Alternative telecom operator Nexcom Bulgaria is planning to invest more than EUR 20mn in development of its WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) network until 2009, company CEO Emil Nikolov unveils. Nexcom will offer services in all major cities by the end of the year. The company targets a 10% share on the market of fixed-line phone services and broadband internet by the middle of the next year. Alternative operators hold some 5% of the wireline telecommunications business in the country at present. Nexcom, Orbitel and Spectre Net control about 90% of the alternative segment, according to estimates Nikolov. Nexcom services about 5,000 business clients, 500 of which use WiMax services, and will offer packages for households by the end of next year. The company holds two point-to-multi-point licences granted in 2005 and at the beginning of this year. Four other companies are also licensed to construct WiMax networks – BTC, Cosmo Bulgaria Mobile (operating the second largest wireless grid GloBul), Trans Telecom, and Maxcom. The point-to-multi-point technology allows telecom operators to integrate wireless and landline grids offering internet, voice, and video transferred based on WiMAX or other standards.
