Telecoms regulator to auction fourth cell-phone licence

The state telecoms commission has decided to launched a tender for issuing another cell-phone licence under the GSM standards in the 1,800MHz range, 2x5MHz spectre, a note on the website of the regulator informs. The licence will have a national coverage. All interested parties are invited to file applications by May 20. Three cell-phone operators are active in the country at present – MobilTel, GloBul, and vivatel. Earlier this month, the telecoms commission decided to offer the free frequency in the range of 900 MHz to the three cell-phone operators to expand their networks. The two largest players MobilTel and GloBul and the WiMAX operator Max Telecom asked the commission for additional network frequencies in the rage of 900 MHz in December but Max Telecom changed its request and asked for additional resources in the 1,800 MHz frequency. The number of SIM cards serviced by the three cell-phone operators in the country already surged to 132.8% of the population as of the end of last year – one of the highest ratios in Europe .
