Turkey reportedly looks for long-term power import deal

The Turkish system power gird operator has reportedly held talks for signing a long-term import arrangement with Bulgaria 's National Electricity Company, according to publications in the Turkish press. Turkey has been importing large volumes of electricity from Bulgaria from 1998 to 2003 but has suspended the long-term bilateral arrangement on lower domestic demand. Reportedly, Turkey is again interested in power imports. However, Bulgaria will have very small export capacities as of the beginning of next year due to the planned closure of the two older units in the nuclear plant in Kozloduy. The lost export potential would be fully restored in 2009 at earliest when ongoing rehabilitation and upgrade projects in the thermo-power complex Maritsa East 1, 2 and 3 will be completed.
