Westinghouse Electric Spain to draft nuclear waste storage technical project

State-run company, which manages and stores the radioactive waste in the country, DPRAO and a consortium led by the international consultant Westinghouse Electric Spain and including also Germany’s DBE Technology, and Spain’s ENRESA signed a contract for the preparation of a technical project and analyses for the safety of the construction of a nuclear waste storage, the economy ministry informs on its website. The facility should be constructed by 2015. Nuclear waste of up to 345,500 tons will be landfilled in the following 60 years and stored safely for at least 300 years. The investment in the storage is estimated at EUR 120mn and will be provided by the EBRD-managed fund for the decommissioning of the four 440 MW closed reactors at the Kozloduy nuclear plant. The facility, which will store low to middle radioactive waste with short life, equipment and liquids from the nuclear plant in Kozloduy, will be located in the village of Harlets in northern Bulgaria, close to Kozloduy.
